Minimum insurance coverage in Ohio won't cover the cost of a serious injury

In Ohio, when drivers purchase automobile insurance, state law requires them to purchase Bodily Injury Liability Coverage. The required minimum for bodily injury coverage is $25,000, which is supposed to help cover the cost of injuries resulting when the policyholder causes an accident.

However, if you suffer serious injuries in a crash, and if the other driver has only the minimum coverage, your medical expenses could far exceed the $25,000 offered by the other driver's policy. Additionally, the injury will likely result in lost income and lost work time, as well as loss of earning capacity -- not to mention the emotional impact on you and your family.

Insurance companies are not on your side.

Even with required minimum policies, insurance companies routinely try to deny coverage or offer inadequate, low-ball settlements that fail to cover the current and future costs of the victim's injuries. Whether dealing with your own insurance company or the other driver's, it's best to have an aggressive attorney on your side to protect your rights and interests.

Keep in mind that a big insurance company may have an army of lawyers ready to fight back against a personal injury claim, and it's only fair that you have equally aggressive representation on your side.

Explore all of your compensation options.

When you're dealing with heavy expenses and serious medical problems after a crash, it's important to explore every available option for covering the costs and getting your health back. Those options may include:

  • The other driver's insurance policy
  • Your own insurance policy, which may include uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage
  • A lawsuit against the other driver
  • A lawsuit against the insurance company
